Mary Lou’s Aspirational Victory

Fresh from a four week break, Fastnet Rock mare Mary Lou headed to Rosehill on Wednesday where she started well in the market in the seventh race of the day, the Di Parker Handicap over 1400m.

With leading jockey Blake Shinn in the saddle, Mary Lou was away well from barrier three before eventually settling in fifth position with the Grant Allard-trained Mr Entertainer going a few lengths clear, ensuring there was plenty of pace in the race.

With hot favourite Asinara about ten lengths from the leader, Shinn pulled Mary Lou out wide before the home turn where she commenced to make her run down the outside.

Hitting the lead at the 100m mark, Mary Lou pulled away to record her third career victory for owners/breeders E-Thoroughbreds Pty Ltd and Evergreen Rich.

"She was off a freshen-up and had a big weight," Shinn said. "It was an impressive performance.

"She sprinted quickly and had to sustain her run right to the line to win and she did that."

Defeating the Waller-trained McCreery by a half-length margin with race leader Mr Entertainer in third, Mary Lou has now earned herself another shot at stakes company and will head to the Group 3 Aspiration Quality over 1600m at Randwick on March 5.

"She's had a second and third at stakes level so far and so we've still got that box to tick and I don't think we're too far away," Cummings said.
