Maven Wiz highlights staying potential

A winner two starts back at Wyong over 2100m, three-year-old Duke of Marmalade gelding Maven Wiz stepped out at the same distance on Tuesday and was once again too classy, defeating his older rivals.

Ridden by Tye Angland, who had ridden the gelding in his past two starts, Maven Wiz was away well from barrier five, going forward to settle in second position on the outside of leader Slade Amigos.

Starting well in the market based on his recent consistent form, Maven Wiz maintained his forward position with race favourite Baroque Girl settling in third, tracking our runner throughout the race.

As Slade Amigos kicked up the 1200m, Winning Kiss who had been caught wide back in the pack made a move to take it up to the leader with Maven Wiz taking a sit.

At the 800m mark the runs started to come from back at the pack and Rightoncue started to make up ground on the leading duo and on the home corner, Maven Wiz had taken over and was traveling extremely well in the lead.

Charging two lengths clear with 200m to run, Baroque Girl made an unsuccessful late charge, but the Mr Ackroyd-owned Maven Wiz proved too good, winning the race by three-quarters of a length from the favourite, with a further two lengths back to All My Loving in third.

With two wins from his last three starts sandwiched by a third placed effort, Maven Wiz is really starting to hit his straps at a staying trip and could take his place in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 11 if he pleases connections leading into the $600,000 event.

“This is amazing. We had a friend who died a couple of years ago, and we said we would get a horse and name it after him. His name was Mark and his second was Fawaz, so that is where Prince Fawaz comes from.
