Royalty in waiting

Class will take a horse a long way and whilst a win in a Goulburn maiden might not read as exciting, the manner of Crown Him’s victory confirmed to the stable that better things lie ahead for the talented three year old.

Placed second to subsequent Gr.1 winner Prized Icon in the time-honoured Listed Fernhill Handicap at Randwick in the autumn, Crown Him resumed off the back of the one impressive barrier trial.

Able to settle back over the 1300 metre trip off a hot speed, the son of the former Cummings-trained Casino Prince moved effortlessly into the race before the turn. Rider Blake Shinn manoeuvred his mount to the centre of track on straightening before setting out after the leaders.

The pair struck the front inside the 200 metre mark and it was clear Shinn was out to give the favourite as easy a kill as possible, merely urging a second effort from Crown Him when challenged late by Fairlighting.

Crown Him lengthened stride again near the line like a good horse should to record as easy a three quarter length win as you are likely to see for some time.

Bred by part owner Steve Smith out of the Savabeel mare Ambitious Princess, the winner is another to carry the famous grey, red and white silks of long time stable client Peter Horwitz and family.

Anthony trained Dealer Principal to Gr.1 glory in the Rosehill Guineas for Peter and whilst there is much water to pass under the bridge, and more immediate challenges like the Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington to face, the promise Crown Him has shown to date suggests a race like the Guineas next Autumn wouldn’t be beyond him.

“This is amazing. We had a friend who died a couple of years ago, and we said we would get a horse and name it after him. His name was Mark and his second was Fawaz, so that is where Prince Fawaz comes from.
