Vergara to tackle Tatts Tiara after classy win

Vergara will go on towards the Tatt's Tiara on the 20th of June after her very classy effort last Saturday at Rosehill.

Whilst a feature race in Brisbane has been on the agenda since her very impressive first-up win this preparation at Warwick Farm, Vergara's plans had to be put on hold and were at risk of being abandoned altogether following subsequent meetings being washed-out. She was a gallant fifth in the Darley Crown at Rosehill, picking herself up to the line after being squeezed for room on the turn and losing confidence. The stable was put off by her result in the Dark Jewel Classic at Scone one week later where she finished worse than midfield. Deciding that the result was more a case of poor tactics than her own short-comings, and considering her altered program Anthony made the decision to run her last weekend in an open benchmark 85 over 1500 rather than an easier race this week (BM 85 for Fillies and Mares over 1400m). This would give her two weeks to the Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich, or three weeks to the Tatts Tiara (1400m) at the Gold Coast.

Since the run, Vergara has pulled up extremely well. She continues to relish her work and life in the stables and we are looking forward to seeing her in Queensland in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Fontelina will take his place in the Stradbroke handicap this weekend at Doomben. After a succession of frustrating rides we are hopeful of, firstly, a sensible ride and ideally an inspired one! Having been ridden out of the gates at too great a speed for him to produce anything in the finish at his last two runs, and settling too far back to be effective in a dawdling All-Aged Stakes, the stable is praying for an advantageous ride for the horse to produce his best. Unfortunately he has drawn poorly in barrier 19, though he comes into barrier 15 with all the emergencies to come out.

And lastly, in a trip down memory lane, we couldn't help but notice a striking resemblance between Taylor Marshall on Saturday aboard Vergara in the photo attached to this photo from the archives

“This is amazing. We had a friend who died a couple of years ago, and we said we would get a horse and name it after him. His name was Mark and his second was Fawaz, so that is where Prince Fawaz comes from.
