Montaigne sold to Hong Kong

Exciting three-year-old Montaigne will not race in the Australian Derby after a deal was struck to sell the horse to Hong Kong interests.

The deal, believed to be a seven figure amount, was completed since the Anthony Cummings-trained gelding finished fourth in last Saturday's Group I The BMW (2400m).

"We've had interest from Hong Kong for the last couple of months and we agreed on a figure after his fourth in the BMW,” stable spokesman Edward Cummings said.

"You never like to see a horse of his ability leave the stable but it's business and despite our desire to keep him at Randwick, we're always mindful of getting a return for our owners.

"Racing Montaigne has been a great experience for those owners.”

The son of Road To Rock burst onto the scene earlier this year with wins at Warwick Farm and Randwick before placings in the Group I Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group II Hobartville Stakes (1400m).

Montaigne passed a preliminary examination on Tuesday and will be trained by John Moore in Hong Kong.
